Things to ‘cut’ out so you can thrive // Part 1: Comparison
Alright, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again…
Your potential is limitless! Be sure that YOU are not getting in your own way, sister!
We are currently in a time where everyone is moving at different speeds, receiving thousands of mixed messages, and the noise can even be paralyzing leading you to feel stuck, like you’re not doing enough, and feeling behind because you’re not keeping up with your friends, colleagues, or “Slayin’ it Sally” down the street.
I’m gonna give you some tough love in saying the only person in control of how you feel, operate and go through life during our new ‘normal’ is you.
Tip 1: Cut out negative noise!
If it’s driving you bananas and you constantly compare yourself to someone on the gram, facebook, twitter, tik tok, whatever your social media preference is, simply unfollow, hide or take a social media detox for a few. It will still be there when you return and you’ll be better for it.
Tip 2:Take those thoughts captive!
I am all for motivating, uplifting and keeping it real with my peeps. However, if I see or hear something that triggers me, I look inward first to see what I’m currently going through that made me feel a certain way. An example might be: Wow, Sally is really killing it, she keeps moving forward with her business and has pivoted to continue bringing value to her people.
Creeping negative thought: She has a similar biz to mine and is so far ahead of me, why should I even try. (Y’all, Although I’m super pumped to share all the things with you, I literally had these thoughts as I was beginning the process of this new passion project, so this really hit home for me. )
Tip 3: Ask yourself “Recalibration Thoughts and Questions”:
-What can I admire about what Sally is doing?
-I admire that she is still showing up for and serving in her own unique way
-The fact that she is currently doing something in the direction that my purpose is leading me, lets me know there is a need for it in the market
-I cannot compare my beginning to her middle. We all move, progress, and grow at different paces.
Remember: Your projections become your perceptions. Repeat. Let that sink in.
In the words of Marie Forleo, a BA lady boss who’s got her *ish together,
“Every Pro starts off as an amateur. There’s not one top athlete, writer, scientist, architect, entrepreneur, programmer, musician, or potter who enters the field at the top of her game. To begin anything new or learn anything new means you will be a neophyte. You must go from outsider to insider. Respect that. Embrace it. Be willing to suck.”
-Everything is Figureoutable (grab it here)
Let me be honest with you, launching my passion project in the midst of a pandemic definitely threw me a curveball. All sorts of questions kept coming to mind: Is it insensitive to launch something during this time? This was meant to be an exciting endeavor, will it even be received as our world, communities, small biz’s are facing hardship? The list could go on, but you get the picture.
At the end of the day, I wanted to show up for my people and serve to the best of my abilities regardless of whether we are in the midst of a ‘shutdown’ or the fact that Sally is killin’ it over there--Way to go, sister!
Whether you’re just getting started, wanting to make a pivot, or completely up-level your biz, you know what this feels like, as I have too. The next time you feel that comparison is getting you down, flip the script, honor those who have gone before you and put one un-pedicured (lol) foot in front of the other and do the dang thing! There is room for YOU and for Sally to thrive. Self-sabotage is not welcome here.
Who’s willing to suck at something new with me? Write down something new you’re trying in the comments and let’s cheer one another on!
